Physicals Advent Calendar Day 22 – Out with the old…..

Hello!

Once a year, the clever folk over at the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) come up with a list of the top fitness trends for next year based on an industry wide survey:

So with next year and setting SMART goals in mind, what does this mean for you?

Wearable technology is the obvious first choice…. humans love new gear and technology, but these devices are essential for tracking and measuring progress and getting data readout on how hard you’re working.

Body weight training and HIIT training remain popular (I have a little HIIT based treat for you in the pipeline), but the other stand outs for me are the increase in the importance of STRENGTH TRAINING. A vital training tool for women and essential for anyone looking to reduce body fat. Don’t forget we run a specialist strength training group session every Wednesday night.

Personal Training remains popular, the only real way of getting into the specifics of a training plan is always to get professional help, and group personal training – which we are launching in January – has made it’s first appearance in the list.

Other interesting inclusions are the continued influence and importance of yoga, a return to popularity for outdoor activities- such as mud runs and cross country challenges – sports specific training and smart phone exercise apps. Which coupled with wearable technology can be incredibly effective.

The only real surprise omission in my eyes is the increase in online coaching. The Body Coach and HIITmax training programs are really taking off at the moment, and non-contact fitness coaching will be massive next year for people that are gm savvy but need a little guidance.

The main thing to take away from this, is that fitness and training has never been more diverse as an industry. There are so many different ways to train and enjoy getting and staying fit. All it take is a little trial and error to find something you enjoy doing, that gets you maximum results. Proof that there really is something for everybody!

Let me know if there is something on that list (or anything else) you’d like to try and I’ll help you find something local to you to help you get started!

Thanks for reading!
